dLeña’s Fourth Annual Viva Abejas Culinary Celebration Returns this Spring

Celebrate the importance of bees in Mount Vernon Triangle from March 25 through April 22

Washington, DC—dLeña by Chef Richard Sandoval is thrilled to announce the return of its annual Viva Abejas campaign this spring. From Tuesday, March 25, through Earth Day, Tuesday, April 22, guests are invited to indulge in bee-centric dishes and drinks at the modern Mexican concept.

One in every three bites of food depends on bees for pollination. Chef Richard Sandoval aims to celebrate this integral part of the food cycle with a holistic approach to food, signature activations, cultural education, philanthropy, and more.

Chef Sandoval and dLeña Executive Chef Carlos Camacho have crafted special food and beverage offerings focused on bees, utilizing sustainably-obtained honey, pollen, and other bee-derived ingredients. dLeña’s bee-centric specials include the coconut tuna ceviche ($21) with red onion, mint, radish, cucumber, avocado, fresno chile, toasted coconut, and orange blossom honey, and the braised short ribs ($42) with agave honey, sweet potato, roasted heirloom carrots, chimichurri, and grape demi-glace. Pair these dishes with featured libations like the Sweet Revolution ($19) with mezcal, honey, guava purée, blood orange, Campari, and Alma Finca orange liqueur, topped with sparkling wine, or the alcohol-free Golden Melody ($14) with honey, chamomile tea, ginger beer, lemongrass, and oranges. Guests ordering any Viva Abejas food or beverage specials will receive wildflower seed packets to plant flowers at home, directly aiding the bees.

In 2023, Chef Sandoval authored a children’s book, Viva Abejas, to teach young learners about the importance of bees to the food system and how they can be a part of ecological change. The book is available for purchase as both a hardcover and paperback in Spanish and English on Amazon. Chef Sandoval toured the US and internationally to read his book to elementary children and lead them in a cooking class, teaching them the importance of sustainability. 100% of the book proceeds directly benefit two organizations: the Akumal Cultural Foundation, providing a free after-school program and children’s library in Akumal, Mexico, and the World Bee Project’s World Hive Network, which implants AI technology in 30,000+ hives globally to help monitor bee health on a global scale.
