“My favorite wines in the last couple of years have been from a region known as New California. I’m really excited about offering some of these new varietals to guests that may have a different understanding of California wines,” says Jefferson. “Diners will discover California wine made with a mind for ecological impact and the ability to utilize the terroir to the fullest – offering the best glass possible.”
In culmination of California Wine Month, Jug & Table will host The Renaissance Wine Dinner on Wednesday, September 25 at 7 PM.
The featured wines are made and farmed in The Sierra Foothills through a different, more European style emphasizing acid over intensity and fresh fruit character over richness. The wines are elegant and more interesting, tasting like the slopes of the Sierra Mountains rather than the estates of Napa.
The Sierra Foothills of California known as the Fellowship of Friends were established in 1970 and cove a large portion of land in Northern California. In 1982, they established The Renaissance vineyard which operated which operated until 2015.
Today, there are a several winemakers and vignerons tending to the same vines to continue producing wine today. The first winemakers, Aaron and Cara Mockrish, a couple who met in Washington D.C., lease some of the vines and produce Frenchtown Farms wine. The Mockrish’s mentor Gideon Beinstock produces Clos Saron on the same land. They are known as two of the most lauded natural winemakers in California.
Wines poured at the dinner will include:
·Clos Saron Rosé “Tickled Pink” Syrah Graciano Viognier, Sierra Foothills, CA 2015. A rich and complex rosé with more savory nutty notes than most rosé but still maintains fresh red fruit and light floral notes.
·Frenchtown Farms Riesling Magnum, Sierra Foothills, CA 2018. An orange wine with floral and tropical notes are mingled with a complex savory backbone. This wine has elements of oxidation and reduction, rich and nutty while still being clean and refreshing.
·Frenchtown Farms “Indigeaux” Merlot Cabernet and Semillon, Sierra Foothills, CA 2018. Plum and darker fruit, with herb and earth notes, bigger texture and grippy tannins.
· Taken from Granite Elegance unknown varietals Sierra Foothills, CA 1999. An ideal expression of an aged big California red. This wine has deep notes of cassis and blackberry as well as an earthy richness.
The wines will be paired with a 4-course dinner prepared by Executive Chef Jenn Flynn. Courses will include California Oyster served two ways, West Coast Uni Pasta or Smoked Guanciale with a Preserved Egg, Lamb Shank or Sea Island Red Peas with Cucumber and Herb Salad, and a Mexican Chocolate Crème Brûlée. Tickets are available for $85 per person and can be purchased here.
